Those who wish to work as drivers of international cargo vehicles must have a Category C+E driver’s license and at least 2 years of work experience. Does a person need to complete any additional training before getting a job in Lithuania? How long does it last?

According to the Directive 2003/59/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 15 July 2003 on the initial qualification and periodic training of drivers of certain road vehicles for the carriage of goods or passengers, future professional drivers of all European Union countries and those who wish to transport goods and passengers for commercial purposes must obtain Code 95. What documents are required to work in Lithuania?

How long does it take to get the documents granting the right to live and work in Lithuania?

The exact duration depends on the country of origin and the exact circumstances (e. g. after the quotas for drivers of international freight transport vehicles are filled, an additional permit from the Employment Service is required). It takes approximately 1 month to process the required documents.

What documents are needed to change the employer? What is the procedure for issuing such documents?

In order to change the employer, an employee must apply to the territorial department of the Migration Department in order to obtain the permission of the central authority of the Migration Department to change the employer. The necessary documents are prepared within 2–3 days, the migration service makes a decision within 22 business days. It is important to know that until a decision is made to allow a change of the employer, the employee must work for the previous employer.

How long does it take to process documents when coming to work in Lithuania for the first time?

When an employee comes to work in Lithuania for the first time, the employee needs to have an invitation for a visa and all the necessary documents. If there are still valid quotas at that time, the preparation of documents takes several days, and if the quotas are already filled, additional procedures and documents from the Employment Service are required; therefore, the processing of documents may take 1–2 weeks. What should an employee who already has a national visa but wants to obtain a temporary residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania need to know?

It is important to know that 3–4 months before the expiration of the national visa, it is necessary to submit an application for a temporary residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania. After the visa expires, another visa can be issued no earlier than 180 days later.
